Issue #1

To honor the feeling that most everyone who picks up a copy of AdHoc is a participant in this thing we call independent music, we’ve dedicated our first issue to the idea of the “extra-musical.” In some cases, it’s the ancillary things that actually make all those audible vibrations actually mean something to us. And even when that’s not the case, taking a good look at the people and places and art work and economic transactions that surround a piece of music can certainly help us understand what we’re hearing. Whether sussing out the overlap between Bjorn Copeland’s visual art and the music of Black Dice is your idea of a good romp, or wiling away an afternoon reading about one band’s very demoralizing experience on a Weezer-themed tropical cruise, we hope that somewhere in these pages we’ll be able to capture something of what it means to be a participant, right now, in this very complicated thing we all couldn’t live without.
AdHoc issue one includes interviews with Animal Collective, Black Dice’s Bjorn Copeland, Sensations’ Fix’s Franco Falsini, Mount Eerie’s Phil Elverum, and The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, in addition V. Vale of Re/Search Publications and the ‘70s San Francisco punk rock fanzine Search & Destroy, which inspired us to do what we do. Edited by Emilie Friedlander and Ric Leichtung. Design by Jesse Hlebo.
